Bonjour Monsieur

Cordialement
Fida

Subject: Inquiry from Canada

Dear Sir,

I am looking for information about my great grandfather Isaac Khoury, who was a Maronite priest in the town of Sebhel (sometimes spelled Sib'il or Sebaal - located between Zgharta and Ehden) in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I have previously written to the Patriarchate, but have received no reply.

I am very fond and proud of my Lebanese ancestry and our Maronite heritage, and would like to learn more about Bounna Isaac. I was born in Mexico and now live in Canada, but I am teaching my children to love and remember their roots.

I have attached a photo of father Isaac Khoury, who was born circa 1845 in Sebhel. When I see that portrait, it reminds me of the words by the French traveler Laurent D'Avrieux, who visited Sebhel in 1660: "All Maronite prelates live austerely and are poorly dressed and have no income except what the land yields to their manual work. Their garments are poor, but clean; virtues adorn them, not rich clothes embroidered with gold and silver. Their crosiers are of wood, but they are bishops of gold...".

I would appreciate very much any guidance you can give me in order to find out more about my great-grandfather. Maybe there are church archives in Lebanon with his date of birth and death, his wife's name, and maybe information on other relatives such as his parents.

I live far away from Sebhel now - in Vancouver. But my heart is in Lebanon, and will always be.

Kind regards,

Maximo Antonio Kuri (Khoury)

Hello, Elie. My name is Antonio and I belong to the family Abrahão (originally Ibrahim) here in Jacareí, Brasil. My great grand-parent Youssef Ibrahim Nader Raad came from Kobayat when he was a child. I never met him. He passed away before I was born. My family says here that he had strong differences with his brother when they were young and so, they ended up stop talking to each other. Due to these differences, my great grand-parent decided to remove the surnames Nader Raad from his name, in an act of revenge, remaining just Youssef Ibrahim (that's the explanation why our last name turned to Ibrahim "Abrahão").

I really would like to know more things about my ancestors... I know much little from them... I intend to go to Kobayat with my wife very soon to get closer to my ancestor's land and, perhaps, to my remaining relatives in Lebanon. Do you have any clue about my family? Places they lived? Remaining relatives? Where they worked??
I'll wait for your answer and i hope we can meet each other soon...

Thank you in advance and best regards!!!
Antonio Celso Abrahão.

Would be great if we could get in touch.

I'm a grand-grandson of a person who came to Brazil from Kobayat. I'd like to know some more from city and Hakme/Hakime family (probably Hakim is the correct way to write it, isn't it?). I know my grand-grandfather's name in Portuguese was Antonio Pedro Hakme. But it's the portuguese way to write it down. Probably the original (and correct) name was something like Anthony Peter Hakim (English form), Antoine Pierre Hakim or something like it. He was born around early 1900s. I also know he had a brother who did stay in Kobayat - his name was Jose, Joseph or Yousseff Hakim.

If you can contact me or send me some useful link I can use to reach people who could help me, would be grateful. My grandfather (older son of Antonio/Antoin) is around 86 years old and would like to hear from his family in Lebanon.

To make a long story short, I work under the patronage of the IMF (www.maronet.org) where we are trying to push forward the Maronite Web Projects.
We tried to refurbish www.maronite.org, the project is still in its very beginnings.
The newest project we are working on is Maronite History, www.maronitehistory.org. We aim to build a Maronite Wiki, with a conservative approach, to be the reference in the History of the Maronites.

I would appreciate if you take a look at our website and add a link to it on Kobayat.org.

We are constantly looking for people that could help us.
